The new adult center in Calvià helps to increase the visibility and prestige of adult education.
For many years, the adult school CEPA Calvià has been teaching in apartments provided by the local government. The main characteristic of adult schools is to make do with what is available: old primary schools, unused buildings, sharing spaces with high schools, and so on. Finally, on February 17th, we will inaugurate the first fully new adult center in Mallorca. The building has innovative infrastructure and spacious, multipurpose areas. This center marks a significant change not only for the Calvià municipality but also for adult education. First, it will be an open and rooted school in the community. Its strategic location next to a sports complex, athletics track, commercial area, and easy access zone makes it easily accessible to everyone. Second, it will bring together all primary, secondary, and vocational education teachers in one physical space, allowing them to work together to strengthen the school by providing contextualized solutions centered on people. Another advantage of the new space is that it will allow us to increase agreements and collaborations with other institutions and businesses. The most important aspect of the new building is the coexistence of formal education (ESPA, Initial Teaching), non-formal education (preparation for access to vocational training and university, language, and computer workshops), and technical training programs in nursing, care for dependent persons, and social integration. This coexistence facilitates a natural transition from one program to another and contributes to creating a strong sense of belonging to the center. It also favors participatory attitudes and facilitates the process of inclusion and social cohesion, as stated by José Palós. Additionally, we hope that this new location will not only reduce absenteeism but also attract new students of all ages. We are a center that adapts to new demands, realities, and situations. We want to offer a diversified, updated, and competency-based education that provides educational, training, and social responses. We are all familiar with stories of success such as "Studying a vocational program as an adult has changed my life," "I can do a video conference with my children" and "My self-esteem has improved." These are precisely our priorities: to improve working conditions, promote active aging and and literacy.
In short, the new facility will serve to transform a scattered and fragmented school into a cohesive and united school. It will be a school where different studies, ages, nationalities, interests, and motivations coexist. It will be a benchmark for other centers. It will be a lively place. It will be a place where we inspire, excite, and, above all, generate bonds. It is clear that the new facility will help us greatly, however, it is in our hands to make the content as relevant as possible.
