Legend has it that a fearsome dragon once terrorized the village of Montblanc, situated southwest of Barcelona. Constantly ravenous, the dragon was appeased with a daily offering of animals to prevent it from wreaking havoc upon the village. However, when the last of the animals was devoured, the dragon turned to the villagers themselves. To satiate its hunger, the villagers resorted to a grim lottery, sacrificing one person each day to the monstrous creature.
One fateful day, the lot fell upon the princess. Despite the sorrow it brought him, the King sent her to face the dragon. Just as the beast was about to consume her, a gallant and dashing knight named Sant Jordi arrived, vanquishing the dragon with his lance and rescuing the princess.
From the blood of the slain dragon, a rosebush sprouted. Sant Jordi plucked a red rose and presented it to the princess as a token of his affection. With the dragon defeated, joy returned to the village, and they lived harmoniously ever after.
